J'approuve.

A few weeks ago, I talked to you about A Feira da Ladra, a big flea market opened twice a week. A Feira das Almas is also a sort of flea market, but it's completely different. It happens once a month (check their Facebook for more information) and the last event was yesterday, so I went and had a look.

The two times I've been there, I felt like entering a totally different world in Taberna das Almas: a hipster world. The sellers and costumers have personal styles, if I could say it like this: extravagant haircuts, film cameras around their necks - and you find this idea in what they sell. Unconventional copies of luxury brands, necklaces made of hooks, etc. You can find clothes, shoes, jewelry, food, books - pretty much everything. What I love about this market is that you can find people selling their own used stuff, but also artists coming to sell their creations. One of my favorite stands is very eccentric: unusual embroideries on which you can find messages like "Fuck me hard" or "I'm a dirty bitch." Uncommon, fun, perfect. I could talk to you about everything i've seen there because there are so many great things, but it would kind of ruin the surprise. So I only have one advice for you: don't miss the next one (probably at the beginning of march)!

After over four months in Lisbon, I've come to know my way around the city. The first goal of this blog is to share information about nice things in Lisbon, but I think there are a few things to know first if you plan on visiting.

Transportation

There are trams, buses and metros in Lisbon. Either you're in Lisbon for a long-term stay and in case you should get the one month pass (35€) for unlimited access to the three; either you are here for a short-term stay and there are several options. You can take one way tickets, or take a 24hr ticket, which is 6€. One advice: if you're planning on taking the historic trams, or go to Belém, you should get the 24hr pass because the prices of the trams isn't the same than a regular ticket (it's very expensive). You can charge a card that costs 50 cents in every metro station.

Money

In Lisbon we have to pay a lot of things by cash. Quite a lot of places don't accept international cards, so if you don't have a Portuguese bank account you will probably have to pay by cash. Some restaurants accept them, some don't. It really depends.

Safety

Be careful with your bags! There are quite a lot of pickpockets, and they're very experimented. Don't leave your stuff out of sight, even at a terrace of a coffee place for example.

If you have questions, don't hesitate to comment on this article, because i'm probably forgetting a lot of things.

I haven't updated my blog recently because I've been back in France for a month, since December 21st. I'm going back to Lisbon at the end of the week, so I'll try getting back to my blogging soon! Have a great week.

I had heard about this flea market once again on the website travelettes. I hadn't had the time to go yet until last Saturday (the weather was just perfect for the occasion). "A Feira da Ladra" is a big second-hand market in Alfama (next to the Pantheon) that occurs every Tuesday and Saturday. If you read the article on travelettes, they will tell you that the best moment to go is in the morning, because that's when you find the best stuff - but we were too lazy. You can find professional sellers, but the majority is made of locals who are here to sell their old stuff. It was quite funny to see the difference with the flea markets in France (for example here, they sell a lot of azulejos). If you like flea / second-hand markets, you cannot miss it. I advise you to also go get lost in Alfama streets, that's where you will get a real sense of the traditional Portuguese culture. If you're hungry or thirsty while walking around the flea market, I advise you to go to "O Panteon" (i think), where the prices are quite low.

As a girl, I have a problem with cupcakes - i'm very attracted to them and I can't help it. As I was surging on the Travelettes' website (you should take a look if you travel, it's very nice), I discovered the Tease Bakery. I saw the word cupcake and thought: "I need to go there". My friend Hélène and I went there for an afternoon snack. The first impression was very positive as it was a cute café, a little girly. We had the choice between 7 or 8 different cupcakes, but we both chose the Nutella one, as we had been craving Nutella for the past months. They were delicious (I wish we would have had more). We both drank iced shakes: Iced Coffee for me & Choco Shake for Hélène I believe. The Iced Coffee was delicious, but the Choco Shake was a little too sweet (and after the Nutella cupcake, it was a chocolate overdose). Plan about 5€ for one cupcake + a shake / hot drink

If you take a look at my description, I spent a year in the US in 2009-2010. So as any pseudo-american, I fell in love with many American products and I made it one of my goals to find some at an affordable price. In Rennes, France where I come from, it is a little hard to find American products. We have one store downtown in which they sell international food, but there aren't that many things. On the Internet, the prices are more than ridiculous. So, when I got to Lisbon, I looked for a store. And I found one (alleluia): Liberty American Store. They have everything: sweet, salty, drinks & random things. The prices are not too expensive compared to what you find on the internet: one Mtn Dew or a small peanut butter M&M's package would be around 1,50€ I think (my favorites). It is a little hard to not be addicted to this store so i'm trying to go there not to often otherwise it would be terrible for my bank account. On the picture are the things I bought when I went there.

The LX Market is one of my favorite places in Lisbon. It is a second-hand market which is located about ten minutes away from downtown. All you have to do is take the tramway towards Belém and stop at Alcântara. It is just under the Bridge of April 25th (the red one that looks like the Golden Gate). In LX Factory, you can find many restaurants who just look amazingly good, a few stores and an amazing bookshop. I love to go there on Sundays to walk around the second-hand market in which you can find jewelry, clothes, pastries and a lot more.

I have had the chance to try one of the restaurants there for a brunch & it was absolutely worth it. I unfortunately don't remember the name and will make sure to check it next time. I will definitely try other restaurants from there and will let you know if they are worth it.

It is impossible to talk about Lisbon without mentioning the famous Pastéis de Belém. In Portugal, one of the most traditional pastries you can find are the Pastéis de Nata. They are from Belém, a Lisbon neighborhood you can access with the tramway, about 15 minutes away from Cais do Sodré train station. You cannot go to Lisbon without having a taste of it. In my opinion, they are the best ones I have tried. They are served warm with optional cinnamon and powdered sugar. Don't be afraid of the crazy line outside, it goes by very fast. If you have a little time, go inside and wait for a table to have a drink (it's quite cheap for such a touristic place). There are many rooms and you should be able to find one without waiting for too long (just sit at a table when people leave, don't wait until it's cleaned).

First, a little introduction needs to be done. My name is Annabelle, I'm 20 and I'm an English student from Rennes, France. I decided to start this blog because I have the chance to be in Lisbon for 10 months as an Erasmus student. Technically, I only have 7 months left, but oh well. I spend a lot of time on the internet looking for goods spots, so that I discover the best of this city, and I thought it would be a good idea to share it on a blog. We'll see how it goes :)
